Thank you March 13, 2010 R. Bufano I am an avid reader. Who got started on this trilogy....I have read hundreds of books since and have Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman to thank. I havent read the trilogy in about 12 years but the characters are still as memorable today as they were then. These books are for all ages and should be highly recommended for new readers as well as old. Probably the most unforgettable characters of any book i have read to date.
Even Smart People Need a Good Story Ever Once in a While December 24, 2009 Abby W. Clifton (Lexington, VA United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Okay, so it seems like all of the negative reviews harp on the simplicity of the writing, the use of deus ex machina, or the "ripoff" of Tolkien. Don't let these comments scare you away, I consider myself at least somewhat educated having gone to college and grad school and I thought these books were amazing and went on to read many more (War of the Souls is my favorite). Lets be honest, if you're looking for a book that will take you weeks to get through and provide you with "deep thought" and dictionary checks every 15 minutes, WHY ARE YOU BUYING A BOOK ABOUT DRAGONS?!? This is a great, entertaining read and even smart people need to just relax and read a great epic story every once in a while without needing to ponder the meaning of life after every page or give their eyes a break for fear they might start spontaneously bleeding. Tolkien=great on a movie screen, but reading his books is about as "entertaining" as trying to give my cat a bath and then file his nails on the chalkboard. It's wordy, it's boring, and it takes waaaaay too long for those of us who work 12 hour days in mentally demanding jobs. I see no reason to know how every blade of grass is looking on any given day in Hobbitland and Dragonlance has all the drama/epic goodness without all the literary fluff. Think of Dragonlance as the Notebook's two hours to the Titanic's three hours. Just as great a story, but more to the point and with much less discomfort worrying if you're going to pee yourself or fall asleep.
And for the "ripoff" haters, since when is using a race/species used in other books in the fantasy world a ripoff? Vampires have been used all over the place as of late and what Weis and Hickman do is exactly what everyone else in the fantasy realm does. You take the basic elf/dwarf/hobbit/wizard race and you make it your own without totally straying from the basic concept of what that race is generally thought to be (short grumpy stone/iron masons, tall skinny pointy-eared magic users). Granted, they didn't go as drastic as a vampire being a fun loving diamond sparkler, but still, as original as you're going to get without it just being ridiculous (an elf that is a fat couch potato who enjoys murdering innocents anyone?). So do yourself a favor, BUY THE SERIES. It's amazing, and even if you're a brainiac, I promise you'll love it and find yourself devouring the rest of the series, which is another great plus...you can live off Weis and Hickman for a year easily without needing to go out and find something new to keep your shelves full!
